Back to Main A Breif History of EMOW

In the beginning there was a need. And over the years a large number of people have responded to this need.

1967 The women of Garneau United Church look at the needs of seniors in their community.
1968 Victorian Order of Nurses take responsibility for developing a Meals on Wheels program.
1969 The first meals are delivered to three homes for a fee of 65 cents each. Meals are prepared by local hospitals and delivered by volunteers
1982 Edmonton Meals on Wheels becomes an independent not-for-profit organization. 51,000 meals are delivered in the first year of operation.
1984 Meals continue to be prepared from various hospital sites with a host of complaints from meal recipients. The frustration of having little quality control leads to the dream of having a Meals on Wheels kitchen facility.
1986 Suitable and affordable land is found!
